Make wishes come true

The Make-A-Wish Foundation, which was founded in 1980 by two parents whose child died of a terminal illness, grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. It has granted over 348,000 wishes in the United States alone as of 2018, making it one of the most prominent charities in the United States and 17 other countries. To qualify for a wish from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a child must be between the ages of two and 18, have a life-threatening medical condition that a doctor can diagnose, and be able to express the desire to the foundation’s staff. A doctor may reject patients for the foundation if he has a medical condition. The Make-A-Wish Foundation follows certain rules to determine which children are in the greatest need of a desire.

Sam and Norma Wishes, a couple from Phoenix, Arizona, established the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 1980. When their son, who had leukemia, was near death, a nurse suggested he make a wish. The Arizona State University football team allowed him to sit in a VIP box and watch the game. His health improved, and he stayed alive longer, after he fulfilled his wish. After this experience, the Wishes decided to assist other children in similar situations. They discussed their idea with a lawyer friend, who said, “You don’t want to ask for a doll; you want to make a wish come true.” He agreed to help them turn their concept into a reality. Thus, the phrase “wish come true” became the foundation’s name.
